The American Conservative Union is the nation's oldest
conservative lobbying organization. ACU's purpose is to effectively
communicate and advance the goals and principles of conservatism through
one multi-issue, umbrella organization. The Statement of Principles
makes clear ACU's support of capitalism, belief in the doctrine of
original intent of the framers of the Constitution, confidence in
traditional moral values, and commitment to a strong national defense.
Over the years, ACU has been on the cutting edge of major public policy
battles. Among ACU's significant efforts, past and present, are fighting
to keep OSHA off the back of small businesses, opposing the Panama Canal
giveaway, opposing the SALT treaties, supporting aid to freedom fighters
in Marxist countries, promoting the confirmation of conservative
Justices to the Supreme Court, battling against higher taxes, and
advocating the need for near-term deployment of strategic defenses.
ACU has rated every member of the House and Senate since 1971. As the
definitive conservative rating listed in all major political almanacs
and reference guides, the ACU ratings are often quoted by the media and
are extensively used by political strategists and candidates running for
public office.
